nutrition & mental health

The development of a country depends a lot on its health. WHO defines health as "the presence of physical, mental, social and health states and spiritual aspects of one's life, as opposed to simply the absence of disease or infirmity". An individual is considered mentally healthy when he or she is aware of his or her own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can also make a positive contribution to society.  Mental health plays an important role in both individual well-being and community effectiveness.

Impacts on mental health

  • Academic performance
  • Productivity at work
  • Development of Positive personal relationships
  • Crime rate
  • Alcohol & drug abuse

Delusional disorder- A person who suffers from delusional disorder has difficulties recognizing reality. The person is unable to distinguish between what is real and what is imagined.  The term delusion refers to a false belief that has been created by incorrectly interpreting reality.   Psychotic symptoms, such as delusions, are present in a wide range of psychiatric disorders.  It is often used to describe behavior characterized by recurring, non-bizarre delusions when there is a high prevalence of delusional symptoms, such as being followed, poisoned, deceived, conspired against, or loved from a distance.  It is considered plausible that non-bizarre delusions can occur in a small proportion of situations; i.e., they could be proven to be true.  Usually, these delusions are caused by misinterpreting perceptions or experiences.  It is either false or highly exaggerated that the situations are portrayed.  As a result of the low rates of case finding and treatment completion, the incidence and prevalence of the disease have remained more or less stationary over the years.

Depression- At least two weeks before you develop depression, you must be unable to carry out your daily activities and experience persistent sadness.

A person with depression is likely to have several of the following characteristics as well:

  • a loss of energy
  • a change in appetite
  • sleeping more or less
  • anxiety
  • reduced concentration
  • indecisiveness
  • restlessness
  • feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
  • thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

There is no doubt that depression has become one of the most prevalent and common mental disorders in the world. There are more than 3 billion people living with depression worldwide. As a result, it contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. Suicide can be the result at its worst.

Addiction to the Internet- "Internet addiction" develops slowly due to widespread access and use of the Internet. IAD, or Internet addiction disorder, is the use of computers excessively that interferes with daily life. It is also called Internet overuse, problematic computer use, or pathological computer use. There is no single cause for these disorders, which eliminates the term addiction which divides and distracts.

Approximately 6 percent of children worldwide are affected by Internet addiction, but 7 percent are affected in India.

Mental illness- Behavioral disorders causing disturbances in thinking, mood, or behavior that go against cultural norms. There is usually distress and interference with personal functioning associated with the symptoms.

Stress- As a physical, chemical, or emotional factor, stress has the ability to cause bodily or mental unrest as well as contribute to the development of diseases.  Trauma, infection, toxins, disease, and injury are some of the physical and chemical factors that can cause stress. Stress and tension can be caused by a variety of emotional factors.

Whenever a force affects the body's balance and stability, it is referred to as 'stress' by scientists and physicians. Psychological stress triggers a reaction in the body that releases chemicals in the blood, according to many people. These chemicals increase strength and energy.  Experiencing mild stress and tension is sometimes beneficial.

We often work better, focus better, and work energetically when we are mildly stressed during a project or assignment.  Stresses are classified as eustress ("positive stress") and distress ("negative stress"), which are roughly translated as challenges and overloads.  The Negative effects of stress occur when it is unmanaged or overwhelming.

Mental health during pandemics- COVID-19 outbreaks are being reported from all over the world through television, social media, newspapers, family, and friends, among other sources. It is a difficult time for all of us. Everyone experiences fear at some point in their life. When we are anxious or panicked, we may think, say or do things that we wouldn't normally think, say or do.

Exercise and Mental Health- A healthy lifestyle requires regular exercise. Consistently working out for 30 minutes each day can do more than simply improve your physical health and lower your body fat. One of the biggest benefits of regular workouts is that they improve your mental health. According to a study conducted at the Center for Brain Health, Dallas, regular exercise improves brain health and function.

You can boost your mental well-being and reduce daily stress by exercising regularly, no matter whether you're new to exercise or a seasoned workout enthusiast.

These eight benefits of exercise for mental health and happiness can make you feel better.

Nutrition

Health is dependent on nutrition, which is a basic human need. From a very early age, it's imperative to eat a healthy and balanced diet in order to grow, develop, and stay active.  The Health and nutrition of a population are strongly influenced by food consumption, which is heavily dependent on production and distribution. There are many factors that influence diets over time, as well as complex interactions between them. There are many factors that influence dietary consumption patterns, including income, prices, individual preferences and beliefs, culture, geography, the environment, and social and economic conditions. The pace of these changes seems to be accelerating, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. In order to reduce the global burden of non-communicable diseases, trends in consumption patterns should be examined and healthy diets and lifestyles emphasized.

Nutrition transition- Non-communicable diseases are also being influenced by dietary and lifestyle changes, often referred to as the 'nutrition transition'. There are both quantitative and qualitative changes to the diet that are characterized by the 'nutrition transition'. Achieving higher energy density in the diet means greater fat and sugar content in foods, higher saturated fat intake (usually from animals), lower intakes of complex carbohydrates and fiber, and fewer fruit and vegetable servings. As a result of these dietary changes, lifestyle changes have also been observed that reflect decreased physical activity at work and during leisure time. Furthermore, poor countries continue to suffer from nutrient deficiencies and food shortages.

organic foods- Organic food is a product that has been produced in accordance with organic production standards taking into account biodegradability, soil health, chemical-free inputs, and other factors.

Food fortification- To increase the nutritional value of staple foods such as rice, milk, and salt, fortification is the process of adding vitamins and minerals such as iron, iodine, zinc, and Vitamin A & D. It is possible that these nutrients were already present in the food before processing.

By fortifying foods, people's diets can be improved. A person's health is not at risk when micronutrients are added to their diet. It is unlikely that an overdose of nutrients will occur given the small quantity added and the well-regulated method of adding nutrients.

Benefit:

  • People do not need to change their eating habits or patterns for this to work. Nutrients are delivered in this way in a way that is culturally acceptable.
  • There is no change in the taste, feel, or appearance of the food.
  • In a relatively short period of time, it can be implemented and results can be seen in the improvement of health.
  • Utilizing existing technology and delivery platforms is a cost-effective method.
